If this is a TEMPORARY tank, then you can fit 5 juvenile red belly piranhas. You must understand though, piranhas grow very quickly, so you will need a much bigger tank. A good rule of thumb is that each adult red belly piranha will eventually need 20-30 gallons of space. So if a 40 gallon tank is all you will have, then you should only get 1. (If you get 2, one will attack the other.)

hi
first of all, I am a mexican teenage, so if I make any mistake please correct me XD

look: a gallon equals 3.785 litters... each piranha needs 80 litters for itself... so 40 gallons are 151 litters...
you can put 2 piranhas there and they would fit perfectly...

but you must know that piranhas are group animals, they have to be at least 3 of them so taht they are less shy (timidas) and more agressive... so you would need a 250 litters (66 gallons) for 3 piranhas... you also need a filter that filters 3 times the acuarium capacity in 1 hour (in your case you would need a 120 gallons per hour filter)... and thats pretty much I can help you with

again, sorry I if I dont write correctly

saludos!!

you have to remember that the juveniles will grow big, about 12"! and you should have absolutely no more than 3.
2 would probably be better.. I'm raising 3 juvenile RB Piranhas in a 10 gal, and from there they are going to my (currently cycling) 55 gal. where they will be alone in the tank.
